AUSLAN Interpreting
The Access and Inclusion Service can arrange an Auslan (Australian Sign Language) interpreter for students who are deaf or hearing impaired.
Students are responsible for advising the Access and Inclusion Service of the following:
- Class times and location where an interpreter is required, 3 weeks in advance
- Absence from a scheduled class or cancellation (in advance where possible)
- Withdrawal from a course
- Any issues they are experiencing with Interpreting Services.
Notetaking Service
At UniSA most courses provide students with lecture notes online. Some students may need a notetaker when notes or lecture recordings are not available, and their disability means they are unable to take lecture notes themselves. Some students may be provided equipment loan or use of assistive technology in lieu of a notetaker.
Students are responsible for advising the Access and Inclusion Service of the following:
- Class times and location where a notetaker is required, 3 weeks in advance
- Absence from a scheduled class or cancellation in advance where possible. (Services are not provided when students do not attend class)
- Withdrawal from a course
- Any issues they are experiencing with Notetaking Services.
Notetakers are trained and discuss with the student how the notes are to be presented. Notetakers are required to maintain student confidentiality. Notetakers are only provided for students who require this due to their disability or condition, and if this has been agreed to as part of their Access Plan.
The Access and Inclusion Service equipment may be loaned on the basis of disability related requirements to support students. Equipment is usually loaned for on campus use and does not include equipment for a home office.
Student Equipment
The Access and Inclusion Service has a variety of equipment available, including:
- Portable FM system for hearing impaired students
- CCTV for vision impaired students
- Electronic Spellcheckers
- Digital notetaker recorders
- Ergonomic back and arm support for computer or class room use
- Laptop computers (available for use on campus only)
- Electronic stethoscopes
- Electronic wheelchairs
Where necessary the service will purchase new equipment to meet the disability related access requirements of individual students.
Personal care
The Access and Inclusion Service can assist in facilitating the provision of care support on campus for students who require personal care. The Access and Inclusion Service can help in areas such as facilitating temporary parking for carers, providing personal care on campus, assistance with scheduling class times to allow provision of care, and help with access to facilities on campus for supported personal care. The University does not provide personal care services directly to students as this support is provided by government support services. Access and Inclusion staff will help students in negotiating the provision of appropriate support with external agencies where required.
