Academic adjustments
Any student, whose disability, mental health or medical condition impacts on their studies may be eligible for reasonable adjustments. Reasonable adjustments are based on individual needs and aim to minimise the impact of the disability, mental health or medical issue. Reasonable adjustments can include academic adjustments which are changes to course content, delivery and assessment. Students negotiating adjustments should have an Access Plan.
Academic adjustments should not lessen the genuine academic standards of the course and should not give a student with a disability an unfair advantage over other students.
Students need to discuss any requests for adjustments to their courses with the relevant Course Coordinators and can seek assistance from the Access and Inclusion Service if required.
Common adjustments which may be negotiated include:
- Allowance to record classes
- Extra assistance with practicals
- Extra time for in-class tests
- Extra time for assignments
- Stand and sit (move around) during class
- Lecturer to use microphone for FM transmitter
- Use of contrasting colours on board (ie, not red or green)
- Provision of extra notes and materials
Students should make sure that they are aware of relevant University policies:
- Assessment Policies and Procedures Manual (Moderation and Variation Section 3)
- Students with disabilities Policy No. C7.4.7 Reasonable adjustments to teaching and assessment
