In Impressions. Reproductions, Angelica Harris-Faull offers a consideration, complication and diversification of Western socio-cultural depictions of reproductive organs through a research driven investigation of relief printing and relief methods to highlight the interconnected relationships between identity, embodiment and reproductive organs.

ACADEMIC ENGAGMENT: MAY

Over the course of a month 8 UniSA visual arts practitioners comprising of students and lecturing staff will develop one of their own works in progress in the gallery space.

Through adjustment, rearrangement and manipulation this creative lab will underscore duration, action and reflection in the creative process. It will consider the relationality of objects in space. What do revisions and interventions yield? What kind of influence companion objects and parallel processes exert on one another? 

Documented photographically at weekly intervals, the work and documentation will form the basis of a facilitated workshop with participants to be held in the space in late May.

Christopher Houghton: Grounded

Christopher Houghton’s large-scale analogue photographs document the Adnyamathanha and Ngarrindjeri lands of South Australia. Approaching image making as a form of embodiment, Houghton’s abstracted photographs of earth, rocks, trees and sky explore place and consider concepts of nature, culture and deep time.

Amanda Sefton Hogg: Linear Landscapes of the Imagination

Linear Landscapes of the Imagination is a studio-based enquiry into the ontology of line in a contemporary drawing practice. Landscape is a foundational concern of the enquiry: the connection to land as landscape; as a space for imagining and for drawing the imagined. Not from the position of observation drawings of a horizon-based landscape, but rather to examine and articulate the linearity of landscape as a vehicle for exploring an inner landscape. The resulting drawings exist as memory-traces; shadows created as erosions of memory, as tangible creations of the artist’s imagination: lost, forgotten and remembered; visualised as autoethnographic, linear mappings.

As part of the exhibition To Become Two, artist Alex Martinis Roe led a 2-week workshop designed for UniSA students to examine the politics of storytelling in contemporary art practice and the effects of different kinds of historiographic methods across a range of media, including video installation, documentary film, archival display and sculptural memorial.

In the Round presents artworks developed through the workshop. This work-in-progress showing is an extension of the participating students process and learning, and continues their shared conversations around the politics of storytelling.

EO Gill is a video artist, based on Gadigal land (Sydney), whose work interrogates gender, class and intimacy using self-reflexive documentary style. In conversation with Frances Barrett, artist and Lecturer in Contemporary Art, UniSA, they will draw focus on Gill’s recent film, CLEAVE (2021), to address queer filmmaking practices, the modality of the ‘voyeur-cum-documentarian,’ queer erotics and autofiction.

Isabel Margot is an artist and poet working with sound, performance, video, image, installation, sculpture and text. Adopting a fluid, hybrid and time-based practice that aims to evade definitive confines, her work interrogates tensions, embodied listening, points of encounter between seemingly opposed entities, instabilities and notions of disclosure and withholding. Through an exploration of space, personal/public narratives, archives, identity, gender, corporeality, or the techno-human interface, she seeks to question and subvert dichotomous relationality.
