Research ethics

Any research that involves humans (participants, data, samples), or animals (breeding, observing, handling, testing, sampling), needs special ethical consideration. Approval will need to be sought from the relevant ethics committee before you proceed with your research.

Any teaching involving live animals will require approval, and some teaching with human participants may require approval.

Human ethics

Research that involves human participants, or their data or tissues, has ethical aspects that require careful consideration. Individual researchers have primary responsibility to ensure their work is ethically acceptable. Any research of this nature will require approval by the University’s human research ethics committee or other processes.

Animal ethics

Animal Ethics is about how we think about and interact with animals. In Australia, the overwhelming public consensus is that a high standard of welfare and well-being of animals should be upheld. To safeguard the welfare of animals, uphold compliance with legislation regarding use of animals, and ensure there is accountability for any use of animals in research or teaching, all such use must be approved and monitored by the University’s Animal Ethics Committee.
