Inspiring young talent through project-based PhD opportunities is another way that we work with industry to support thought leadership and address the complex problems of our partners.  Our researchers and students work with industry on many projects, including:

  • Use of virtual reality in reversing or delaying the progression of cognitive impairments
  • Application of train driver advice system that continually calculates the most efficient way to complete a journey
  • Design and development of submarine control room layouts and physical ergonomics of future attack-class submarines
  • Investigating how immersive technologies can be incorporated into brain training tools to support pain management and education.

My research has had a strong focus on augmented reality, virtual reality, wearable computers, and user interfaces. This focus has meant I have had the opportunity to work on a range of exciting projects with industry, including with CADwalk Global, BAE Systems Australia, CSIRO, and DST. With BAE Systems Australia, we are investigating, developing and producing smart manufacturing facilitating technologies to bring Industry 4.0 technologies to modern ship building. Projects with DST are investigating the future methods of providing interactive information to commanders in the command centre.

Architectural computing and design cognition are two of my main research areas. Applying this research to real-world issues is a key focus of mine, and through recent partnerships with Australian Institute of Architects South Australian Chapter, architecture studios such as Hames Sharley and ARM Architecture, and end-user organisation Uniting Communities, we explored innovative ways to integrate emerging technologies into architecture practice and education and studied their impact on design and designers. Using technologies such as Virtual and Augmented Reality, Building Information Modelling and Digital Twins, we can virtually test different design solutions and help improve the quality of and living experiences in the built environment.

From building solar cars to designing energy policies that increase the use of renewable energy, I have worked with industry partners on many projects that focus on the application of scheduling and control methods to develop practical solutions to real-world problems. For over 23 years I have worked with TTG Transportation Technology to develop Energymiser, software that helps the international rail industry to optimise train scheduling, energy efficiency, and driver safety. Now that TTG has joined Modaxo, we are exploring how to improve not only the scheduling and control of trains, but also light rail and buses.

I am passionate about conceptualising and recording vernacular knowledge, architecture and cultural heritage in Australia and Indonesia. My colleagues and I from UniSA’s Australian Research Centre for Interactive and Virtual Environments [IVE] worked in partnership with local government to investigate and document colonial mining heritage in regional South Australia. As part of this research, we have collaborated with local Aboriginal Nations around cultural recognition and empowerment through cultural heritage preservation and curatorial opportunities.
