Student Achievements

UniSA students receive support at the Rural Health and Aged Care Education Centre to complete placement projects at Matthew Flinders Home. Some recent projects include:

Occupational Therapy

  • Participatory Community Practice (PCP) project which focused on development of the foundational requirements of a fishing group for older adults in conjunction with “Health is the Reel Deal” research project.
  • PCP project focusing on the design of safe, accessible and meaningful outdoor spaces and gardens at Matthew Flinders Home.
  • PCP project designing a dementia friendly courtyard at Matthew Flinders Home.
  • Field Work students planning and implementing “Sunshine Club” within Matthew Flinders Home, which is a cognitive stimulation therapy group for set care recipients.

 Physiotherapy

  • Health Promotion projects that researched the effectiveness of a tool using artificial technology (AI) and facial analysis technology to identify pain in dementia patients.
  • Health Promotion students have designed and implemented an evidence based falls prevention program for care recipients within the residential aged care facility.
  • Work Health and Safety students have reviewed various manual handling practices across clinical and ancillary staff at Matthew Flinders Home, with subsequent administrative controls and staff education materials.
  • Work Health and Safety project focusing on developing strategies to manage violent resident behaviours.
  • Health Promotion students have developed education and support resources for carers accessing respite services at Matthew Flinders Home to prevent or limit burnout.
  • Work Health and Safety students have developed job dictionaries and educational resources for staff and volunteers who assist care recipients on and off the community bus.
