This project is a cross-institutional research project with Murdoch University and aims to address a lack of understanding of the language learning strategies employed by students from refugee backgrounds (SfRBS) in enabling education programs at UniSA College as a case study. Particularly, it investigates what strategies that SfRBs employ in English language learning and to what extent their strategies differ by contextual factors such as gender, first language, education experience, country of origins, and academic disciplines.
This research seeks to understand the language learning strategies of refugee-background students who are enrolled in university pathway programs. We would like to ask questions such as: What types of strategies have students of refugee backgrounds used to help them learn English? How can we further improve how we support refugee-background students as they develop their English language skills at university?
Based on this research, we want to develop strategies for refugee-background students and their educators to assist with their language learning at university. We want to use the results to produce publications, resources and professional development workshops that can be used by academic and support staff who teach and / or support students from refugee backgrounds.
