What is the future of drones in Australia?
To examine whether there are benefits to increasing the uptake of drone technology in Australia.
Associate Professor Akshay Vij, Associate Professor Raj Banerjee, Associate Professor Ali Ardeshiri and V. Anilan from CMVI have co-authored a report with other UniSA researchers, as well as researchers from Victoria University, examining the potential benefits of drone technology to Australia. The report was publicly released on 20 April 2023 by Catherine King, the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government. The research was jointly funded by the Commonwealth Government and the iMOVE Cooperative Research Centre.
The study finds that increasing drone use in Australia presents a range of benefits for communities – particularly for regional areas and in emergency relief and disaster management. Australia’s emergency services sector is projected to unlock the greatest potential benefits from drones, having a net productivity increase of 10 per cent – resulting in a $460 million net boost to the national economy. Drones could lead to savings of between $1-8 billion if used in early fire detection, based on scenario mapping using data from the 2019–20 bushfire season. Regional areas are predicted to benefit most – particularly as drone technology continues to improve delivery and transport services.
