UniSA has a commitment to equity and access and recognises that some research degree students who have a disability or long-term medical condition, may require financial assistance to undertake their research project.
The Ability Grant recognises that research degree students with a disability may face additional research-related costs, such as the need for specialised equipment, transport costs or other support to enable them to complete their research project. They may also have limited ability to earn additional income whilst studying.
Note: Other support does not include any medical expenses. It is expected that Medicare will assist with this requirement.
Are you eligible?
Ability Grants are open to enrolled UniSA research degree students who have had their research proposal approved and are in the research phase of their degree. Students may be enrolled either part or full-time.
Applicants must have an Access Plan with UniSA arranged through a Disability Adviser
A supporting statement will be required from the student's Principal Supervisor. On receipt of the application, Graduate Research will contact the Supervisor to comment on:
- how the applicant would benefit from the grant
- the likelihood of the applicant completing the research project.
Value
Grants of up to $3,000 are available to help fund mobility, special equipment at home or other types of assistance specific to your disability during the conduct of the research.
The grant can be paid either as a scholarship at the rate of not less than $100 per fortnight (up to a total of $3,000), or as a lump sum, or a combination of both. Successful applicants will be contacted to obtain information on how the grant is to be paid.
Note: Research degree students are responsible for their financial affairs and will need to ensure that they seek appropriate advice regarding the impact of this grant on other income or taxation.

Forward your application by email or post to Graduate Research. Your application will need to include a quote of the associated costs and a description of how the grant will be used to assist you in your research. You will also need to supply a copy of your UniSA Access Plan.
Applications can be made at any time.
Assessment Process
Assessment is based on the need of the applicant. Graduate Research will notify applicants within two weeks of receipt of the outcome of their application. The University does not guarantee an applicant of success. The University's decision is final and no appeal will be entered into.
Conditions of the grant
- The awarding of the grant is subject to continued enrolment as a research degree student at the University of South Australia.
- No payment can be made during the student's absence on leave.
- Normally one grant, up to a total of $3,000, is available per student.
Privacy
All information will be treated confidentially. A copy of the application will remain on the research degree student's file.
