This exhibition is a photographic history of Hawke’s engagement with the Asia Pacific region as Prime Minister, alongside honours and memorabilia that showcase his legacy.
Under Prime Minister Bob Hawke’s leadership Australia’s engagement with the Asia Pacific greatly expanded. The world was reshaping economically, and China emerged on the world stage as a growing economic power. Australia sought to leverage this growth by establishing multilateral foreign policies with both China and its Asian neighbours.
Hawke sought to utilise Asia Pacific international institutions, to successfully build rapport with foreign power players, and help foster a more cohesive and economically engaged Asia Pacific region, with Australia firmly placed as a key partner.
After Hawke retired from politics, he maintained strong relationships with the Asia Pacific region, he was a Member of the Board of Directors of the Boao Forum for Asia, and received an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities, from Rikkyo University, Tokyo in 2003.
Many Asia Pacific countries strengthened their multi regional organisations during his period in power, and later honoured Hawke for his service and perseverance as a member in reshaping the region.
