This exhibition features artworks by local emerging artists who attend the Group Programs run by Neami National, a community mental health service supporting people to achieve mental and physical wellbeing, and pursue a life based on their strengths, values and goals as they engage in their individual recovery.
Neami Artists describe the exhibition and the healing role of art and creativity:
In this exhibition we take solace in the choices and rights we can influence. The act of making art is an act of freedom in itself. At times it can be difficult to find peace in our mind, body and soul, by placing our hand over our hearts, we explore and celebrate the lightness and openness that comes from moments of freedom and the endless imagination when set free from boundaries.
Artworks will be available for purchase.
Greg Pastwinski is a self-taught artist in Adelaide. He works with pastels, drawing inspiration from his most favourite artist, the late Jean Michel Basquiat. Greg also creates works in ceramics. Greg quotes, “With in a work of art that interests me, there should be implied movement. It should be wriggling with life and maybe even an overabundance of energy. I would want it that the viewer be captivated enough by the work that they stop and consider it much longer than expected.”
Joe Amuso always loved art, especially abstract works but never put paint to canvas until later in life. Joe’s work is inspired by pop art, colourists and naïve painters. To this artist, painting should be relaxing, fun and spontaneous. Joe has been attending the various Neami art programs in Port Adelaide for over twelve years and successfully completed his Artist in Residence through Jump Arts. Joe quotes, “I really like seeing new artists at the groups grow and enjoy themselves making art. The groups are not just about art, it’s about socialising too.” Joe hopes to have his own solo exhibition in the future.
Kylie Douglas is drawn to painting a range of subjects always with a strong focus on bright and bold colours. She enjoys challenging the viewer by creating images that are different to how we thought they might look, by pushing the norms of colour. Kylie says that her initial inspiration for returning to art was for relaxation and that it is one of the best things that she can do for her mental health.
Kylie McGrath is an emerging artist in Adelaide. Her mediums are varied including painting Primarily water colour, acrylic, charcoal and clay. The themes she primarily explores are the beauty of nature. She says, “Nothing in nature is perfectly straight yet perfect in its own right I enjoy painting nature scenes as it reminds me that beauty is everywhere in this busy world, if we choose to notice it, beauty is perfect in its imperfections. Kylies’ philosophy is life is so fast paced now days, slow down and appreciate the small things.
Mel Cordell is a mixed media artist. She is passionate about the environment, with a background in conservation, photography and digital media. Mel enjoys sketching birds, flora and fauna, and has recently started using watercolours in her work.
