ACTIVATING COMMUNITY RESILIENCE

Match Studio is UniSA's innovative learning and research space, where interdisciplinary teams of students, teaching academics, researchers, industry and community organisations engage, think, learn and co-create innovative solutions to real-world challenges.
With over a decade of research, and interdisciplinary practice-based learning producing ‘creative catalysts’ for a diversity of clients under its belt, Match Studio piloted the Match Tournament model during 2021. Match Tournament challenges students to learn and apply Design Thinking, Systems Thinking and collaborative tools and techniques to develop proposals that can make a difference to other people's lives.
This year’s exhibition from Match Studio will display student outcomes and concepts from the 2022 Match Tournament, and for the seventh year running concepts from the Visualising Mental Health project.
The 2022 Match Tournament proponents, the Fay Fuller Foundation, Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation, The Australian Centre for Social Innovation (TACSI) and Wellbeing SA posed the provocation: ‘How might we activate resilience by equipping communities to connect with and support each other in response to traumatic events?’
This exhibition will tell the story of the process undertaken to conceptualise, recruit, and deliver the Match Tournament model, together with a selection of engaging and innovative student outcomes from the two stages of the Match Tournament – Stage 1, the Monodisciplinary Heats, and Stage 2, the Interdisciplinary Design Sprint.
Embedded within the Match Tournament is the Visualising Mental Health project, now in its 7th year. Visualising Mental Health is an initiative of Match Studio bringing together psychologists from the community (led by clinician Dr Gareth Furber) with 3rd Year Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) students at UniSA. Students are asked to develop unique methods for communicating mental health and wellbeing concepts to the broader community.
The work created by UniSA students will be on display in the Kerry Packer Civic Gallery, 6 October to 2 November, coinciding with Mental Health Week (9-17 October) and World Mental Health Day (10 October).
