This year’s exhibition from Match Studio will display student outcomes and concepts from the inaugural Match Tournament, and for the sixth year running concepts from the Visualising Mental Health project, demonstrating Match Studio’s ongoing commitment to nurturing a collaborative community of practice that includes students, teaching academics, researchers, industry and community organisations.

With over a decade of research, and interdisciplinary practice-based learning producing ‘creative catalysts’ for a diversity of clients under its belt, Match Studio piloted the Match Tournament model during 2021.

Match Tournament is an interdisciplinary collaboration of academic and student minds to develop proposals for products, policies, systems, and services that address a Meta Challenge posed by a project proponent/sponsor.

The inaugural Match Tournament proponents, the Fay Fuller Foundation and Wellbeing SA posed the provocation: ‘How might we activate resilience by equipping communities to connect with and support each other in response to traumatic events?’

This exhibition will tell the story of the process undertaken to conceptualise, recruit, and deliver the Match Tournament model, together with a selection of engaging and innovative student outcomes from the two stages of the Match Tournament – Stage 1, the Mono Disciplinary Heats, (within which the Visualising Mental Health project was delivered), and Stage 2 the Interdisciplinary Design Sprint.

Visualising Mental Health, an initiative of Match Studio, which brings together psychologists from the community (led by clinician Dr Gareth Furber) with 3rd Year Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) students at UniSA to develop unique methods for communicating mental health and wellbeing concepts to the broader community, will display examples of the design process which informed the outcomes designed by the students; scaffolded and visualised using the design thinking approach of Match Studio.

The work created by UniSA students will be on display in the Kerry Packer Civic Gallery, 5-29 October, coinciding with Mental Health Week (10-17 October) and World Mental Health Day (10 October).

MATCH STUDIO FLOOR TALKS

Match Studio is the University of South Australia’s innovative learning space, geared to support design thinking skills development through client-focused interdisciplinary project collaboration and professional practice.

Match Studio offers structured student and researcher engagement opportunities to inform innovations for business, industry and policy makers. With over a decade of research, and interdisciplinary practice-based learning producing ‘creative catalysts’ for a diversity of clients under its belt, Match Studio piloted the Match Tournament model during 2021.

The Match Tournament 2021 was an interdisciplinary collaboration of academic and student minds who were asked to develop proposals for products, policies, systems, and services that addressed the Meta Challenge posed by Wellbeing SA’s Mental Health Directorate and the Fay Fuller Foundation - How might we activate resilience by equipping communities to connect with and support each other in response to traumatic events?

Staff and students will walk you through the Match Tournament 2021 Exhibition and talk about the rationale, process and outcomes on display. Match Studio staff will also discuss their plans for the 2022 Match Tournament. University of South Australia staff can find out how they can include their SP2 2022 courses in the tournament. Students can hear from fellow students and discover how they can be involved in this "out of the box elective" or placement working on client projects. This elective will teach students how to work and apply a team-based approach to develop and present their ideas.

The Match Studio Floor Talks are aimed at University of South Australia's academic staff and research colleagues, as well as students. However, all are welcome to attend to learn more about Match Studio and the Match Tournament design challenge and process.
