Join Jane Howard, Deputy Section Editor: Arts + Culture at The Conversation and a panel of Conversation experts: Dr Alice Gorman, internationally recognised leader in the field of space archaeology (Flinders University); Professor Adrian Esterman, Chair of Biostatistics and Epidemiology (University of South Australia) and Rick Sarre, Emeritus Professor of Law and Criminal Justice (University of South Australia) as they discuss the highlights and lowlights of 2021 and take an expert punt at what 2022 will hold.

PANELLISTS

DR ALICE GORMAN
HERITAGE CONSULTANT AND ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, FLINDERS UNIVERSITY

Dr Alice Gorman is an internationally recognised leader in the field of space archaeology and author of the award-winning book Dr Space Junk vs the Universe: Archaeology and the Future (MIT Press, 2019).

Her research focuses on the archaeology and heritage of space exploration, including space junk, planetary landing sites, off-earth mining, and space habitats. She is an Associate Professor at Flinders University in Adelaide and a heritage consultant with over 25 years’ experience working with Indigenous communities in Australia. In collaboration with NASA and Chapman University, she is part of a team conducting the first archaeological study of the International Space Station. Gorman is also a Vice-Chair of the Global Expert Group on Sustainable Lunar Activities and a member of the Advisory Council of the Space Industry Association of Australia. In 2021, asteroid 551014 Gorman was named after her in recognition of her work in establishing space archaeology as a field. She blogs at Space Age Archaeology.

PROFESSOR ADRIAN ESTERMAN
CHAIR BIOSTATISTICS AND EPIDEMIOLOGY

Professor Adrian Esterman is Chair of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of South Australia, a position he has held for the last sixteen years. His career includes five years as a World Health Organization (WHO) staff member based in Geneva and two years as a staff member in the WHO European office in Copenhagen.

His current research covers a diverse range of medical and health areas including infectious disease, gerontology, refugee settlement, diabetes, cancer epidemiology, Indigenous health, mental health, dentistry, and nursing. He has nearly 400 publications, many in high impact journals, with over 16,000 citations. He is currently a Chief Investigator on eight major grants. He is one of Australia’s leading experts in the epidemiology of COVID-19.

RICK SARRE, EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF LAW AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE &
ADJUNCT PROFESSOR, JUSTICE AND SOCIETY, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA 

Emeritus Professor Rick Sarre retired in April 2020 from the role of Dean at the University of South Australia’s Law School to become an Adjunct with UniSA Justice & Society.

Before retiring he had taught commercial law, media law, sports law and criminology for 35 years in four countries, USA, Sweden, Hong Kong and Australia. He is a Past President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology and in 2017 was awarded Fellow status of that society. He is a Professorial Fellow of the Australian Institute of Police Management and is President of the SA Council for Civil Liberties.
