Born and educated in rural South Australia, Pauline Carr has built a career of close to 40 years across the resources, construction, superannuation, education, retail and community healthcare sectors. She has brought her executive expertise in business improvement, governance, compliance and risk management to major enterprises and ASX-listed companies.
After completing a Bachelor of Economics at the Australian National University and later an MBA, Pauline began her professional career with an international resources company before returning to Adelaide for a role with Normandy Mining. Rising to Executive General Manager, she played a pivotal role in the company’s rapid growth and global expansion. Following its takeover of Normandy, Pauline continued in an executive role with Newmont Mining Asia Pacific, part of the world’s largest gold mining company. She was a member of the South Australian Government’s Mineral and Petroleum Expert Group for many years and also chaired the SA Government’s Minerals and Energy Advisory Council.
Pauline currently serves as Chair of National Pharmacies and is a non-executive director of Highfield Resources Limited and Australian Rare Earths Limited. She is a Fellow of both the Governance Institute of Australia and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
She was appointed the University’s Chancellor in 2018 and led the institution with steadiness and care, most notably through the profound challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her leadership was integral to the negotiations and careful navigation that led to the creation of the new Adelaide University. In 2024, she was appointed Transition Chancellor of the new University, underscoring her commitment to shaping higher education in South Australia.
