Professor Simon Marginson is Professor of Higher Education at the University of Melbourne's Centre for the Study of Higher Education. He began his professional life in the 1980s as a national research officer for the Australian Teachers' Union and then graduated with a PhD from the University of Melbourne in 1996, for which he received the Chancellors' Prize for excellence in PhD thesis. He also shared the Australian Association for Research in Education doctoral award.
Today, Professor Marginson is regarded as one of Australia's foremost scholars of higher and international education. He is editor-in-chief of the global academic journal Higher Education and his books and articles are widely used throughout the university world. He is frequently invited to speak at international conferences in east and south-east Asia, the Americas, United Kingdom, western Europe and Russia, and he has also prepared policy papers for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Professor Marginson's recent research has focused on globalisation in higher education, the emerging university systems of east Asia, the welfare needs of international students and the potentials of intercultural education.
