Mr Hyde joined Victoria Police in 1967 and served at country and metropolitan police stations before being appointed to roles in the CIB and as a police prosecutor, as well as other specialist duties. In 1992, he was appointed as an Assistant Commissioner and then Deputy Commissioner in 1994.
In February, 1997 he was appointed Commissioner of the South Australia Police (SAPOL), a position he held 15 years until his retirement in July, 2012.
While serving as Commissioner of Police, he was also a member of numerous boards and committees and served as chair on a number of these, including the Australian and New Zealand Police Advisory Agency.
Mr Hyde is currently working as a special adviser to the Victorian Parliamentary Committee Inquiry on Child Abuse and remains actively involved in a range of community groups and organisations including St John Ambulance SA, where he is a serving board member. Recently, he was also appointed to inquire into the Tasmanian Bushfires by the Government of Tasmania.
He is an Honorary Member of the Leaders Institute of SA (incorporating the Governor’s Leadership Foundation), and is a member of the International Advisory Committee for the Criminology Department at Cambridge University, UK.
In addition to earning a law degree (with first class honours) and an MBA, Mr Hyde was awarded the Australian Police Medal in 1996, the Officer of the Order of Australia in 2008 and was made an Officer in the Order of St John in 2009.
