Peace Foundation poster exhibition launched

Peace exhibition poster by student Edward Hayter

University of South Australia students from the Graduate Diploma of Art and Design and Master of Design have turned their minds and their talents to peace this month to develop a series of posters designed to make us think more deeply about war and peace.

Initiated by UniSA Visual Art and Design lecturers David Blaiklock and Andrew Hill and supported by UniSA’s Match design studio, the posters from student artists will be on display in the foyer of the Festival Theatre this month to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Peace Foundation.

The exhibition will be opened this evening May 2 by Adelaide Lord Mayor Steven Yarwood at 6 pm and will be open until June 2 Monday to Friday from 9 am – 6 pm and at performance times.

The exhibition is part of the About Time South Australia’s History Festival, and highlights arts projects supported by The Graham F Smith Peace Foundation (previously The Graham F Smith Peace Trust) over 25 years of social activism.

The Peace Foundation has been behind many of Adelaide’s iconic theatre productions, arts projects and public art.

David Blaiklock says the opportunity to complete the posters has been of great value for students.

“Approaching a project like this gives our students the opportunity to explore a real brief and then produce creative works that meet that brief, this will be core to the work they do when they complete their degrees,” Blaiklock says.

“It is also a great privilege for them to contribute to the work of the Peace Foundation and to be exhibited at the Festival Theatre, a venue that attracts thousands of patrons from all walks of life.

“I think the students have created some really thoughtful and striking posters that range in style from quite complex and dark interpretations right through to humour.

“Visitors to the exhibition can expect real variety and some very powerful work.”
