  • Country overview minus-thick plus-thick

The Netherlands, officially known as the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is a country in Northwestern Europe. It borders Germany, Belgium and the North Sea. The Netherlands is a founding member of the EU, Eurozone, G10, NATO, OECD and WTO, and is also part of the Schengen area.

The Netherlands has a population of approximately 17 million people, of which 40% live in Amsterdam. The official languages are Dutch and West Frisian. You may also hear Low Saxon and Limburgish spoken in certain regions, however English is widely spoken throughout. The country has strong regional identities and the cultures you see in the north may be very different to those in the south of the country.

The four largest cities in the Netherlands are the capital city of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. The Hague is a centre of European lawmaking and politics and the port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe and any country outside Asia. As such the country has a major influence on the rest of Europe. The Netherlands is widely recognised as the country with the world's best cycling culture, a massive number of windmills and a significant area of land below sea level. The city of Amsterdam is a prime tourist location and features many picturesque canals and waterways. The music scene in this country is thriving, and it plays host to thousands of festivals every year. The local beer and cheese makes for a delicious night out, and the famous tulip fields and flower markets are beautiful sights. The Netherlands is regularly listed among the best and happiest places to live in the world, and offers a great mix of tourist cities and charming country towns. If you have an interest in history, you will find plenty here as there are cities dating back to Roman times. This is also the birthplace of the Dutch East India Company – the world’s first formally listed public company engaged in multiple commercial and industrial activities, international trade, shipbuilding as well as the production and trade of East Indian spices. Some say that all modern-day corporations are 'direct descendants' of the Company.

    Did you know?

Carrots are orange because of the Dutch! The original vegetable was commonly grown in a range of colours. William 11 of England, often known as William of Orange, helped the Dutch gain independence from Spain in the 17th century. It is said that Dutch farmers developed the orange carrot in tribute to him, and grew it in such abundance that other forms of carrot disappeared from mass agricultural production. Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport offers more direct flights than any airport in the world. In 2016, the airport operated 4,633 flights per week.
