Founded in 1975 in close collaboration with the business world and society, Linköping University (LiU) conducts world-leading, boundary-crossing research in fields including materials science, IT and hearing. In the same spirit, the university offers many innovative educational programmes, many of them with a clear vocational focus, leading to qualification as, for example, doctors, teachers, economists and engineers.

LiU has four campuses in three cities: Campus Valla and the University Hospital Campus (both in Linköping), Campus Norrköping (in Norrköping) and Campus Lidingö (in Stockholm). The Faculty of Arts and Sciences offers courses in two of the campuses: Campus Valla and Campus Norrköping and has a free student bus connecting the two campuses.

The areas of Migration and Ethnicity, Computational Social Sciences, Social Work and Social, Environmental Sciences and Cultural Analysis offer courses in Campus Norrköping. Other areas of study offer courses in Campus Valla (Linköping).

LiU is known for a great student life. There are several student associations that organise all kinds of events to participate in. The biggest association for exchange students is ESN Linköping, which arrange semester long activities for exchange students, including cultural activities, parties and trips.

Exchange students who wish to have a peer student can sign up for one at ESN Linköping’s website. The peer student is a Swedish student that can introduce arriving students to the Swedish culture and student life at LiU. The main purpose of the Peer Student Program is to create a greater integration between exchange students and Swedish students.

Linköping, located 1.5 hours south of Sweden's capital Stockholm, is the country's fifth largest city with a population of approximately 161,500 inhabitants. Linköping is famed for being an early diocese, first mentioned in 1104. The city has a long tradition of education, with the earliest cathedral school on record dating to 1266. Today, Linköping is known for its university and high-technology industry.

Gamla Linköping Open-Air Museum is worth a visit to experience what life would have been like in a small Swedish city a hundred or more years ago. Here, you will find wooden houses, cobblestone alleys, gardens and many museums, providing a very different picture from the more familiar modern Sweden.

Sweden, officially the Kingdom of Sweden, is a country in Northern Europe. It borders Norway and Finland and is connected to Denmark by a bridge-tunnel across the Öresund Strait. Sweden is the largest country in Northern Europe, the third-largest country in the European Union and the fifth largest country in Europe in terms of area. The capital city is Stockholm.

The climate is generally mild despite its northerly latitude, and Sweden often has warm continental summers. The climate and environment varies significantly from the south and north, and much of Sweden has cold and snowy winters.

Sweden has a population of 10.3 million people, of whom approximately 2.5 million have a foreign background. It has a low population density of 22 inhabitants per square kilometre, with most people concentrated in the central and southern half of the country. The official language is Swedish, but many minority languages are spoken and 89% of Swedes say they're able to speak English.

Sweden is one of the best countries for those who love wilderness, mountains, lakes and forests. Allemansrätten, translated as “all man's right”, means that nature is free for everyone in Sweden. You have the right to camp almost everywhere you want and forage wild fruit and berries, as long as you don't disturb others. This is the country where you can see wild reindeer, the Northern Lights, Viking remnants, fresh drinkable water in streams, massive mountains for hiking, 100,000 lakes, midnight sun, and piles of snow.

If you're into history or architecture, there are hundreds of castles, old ships, classic Gothic structures, modern Gothenburg structures, ice hotels, medieval cities, and more to discover. Culture wise, Sweden is the third biggest exporter of music after the US and the UK, and loves a big music festival. The biggest sport in Sweden is ice hockey, and watching a match is a great experience.

Sweden is also home to massive Christmas markets. The country is a very friendly and safe location for tourists, and Stockholm is home to Scandinavia's biggest Pride festival. If you're not one for the cold, why not visit during the warmer months and experience the Midsummer holiday traditions.

Did you know?

There are about 300,000 to 400,000 moose roaming freely in the woods of Sweden. Sweden is so good at recycling that the country imports waste from other countries such as Norway.

All students must meet standard exchange selection criteria and any host institution restrictions.

Credits are measured by the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and the following applies:

18 units = 30 ECTS
13.5 units = 22.5 ECTS

It can sometimes be difficult to make up exactly 22.5 units (not all courses will be worth exactly 7.5 ECTS), but you should be able to get very close. Make sure you check with your Program Director if you don’t have exactly 22.5 ECTS.

Students studying in English and students with English as their native language do not need to provide evidence of skills in English.

The codes “A1X” and “A1N” in the level column refers to courses given at the master level, while the codes “G1X”, “G2X”, “G1N”, “G1F” and “G2F” refer to undergraduate level courses.

Limitations and restrictions may apply to courses offered within Linkoping’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Linköping University does not offer airport pick up. Students will need to make their own way to the Campus Valla (Linköping) from Linköping City Airport and to the Campus Norrköping from Norrköping Airport.

Norrköping and Linköping are both situated by the E4 Highway: Norrköping 160 kilometres and Linköping 200 kilometres southwest of Stockholm. Both cities have centrally placed travel centres (railway stations) with many train and bus connections. The Campus Bus connects the three main campuses (Valla, Norrköping and the University Hospital) and is free of charge for students. There is also an airport in each city.

Linköping University does not guarantee accommodation for all their incoming exchange students. They do, however, have a limited number of rooms that we offer exchange students on a first come, first served basis. Students apply for these rooms by using the same application form as for courses.

The student halls are furnished and equipped with shared kitchen facilities. They are within walking/biking distance from the University. If a student is not offered a room from the University, further instructions will be sent by the housing coordinator at Linköping University on how to search for accommodation.
