UNIVERSITY OF LIECHTENSTEIN

The University of Liechtenstein was established in 1961 through the initiative of business and the State under the name “Abendtechnikum Vaduz”. It is funded by the State and various business organisations. In addition to the departments of Mechanical Engineering, the departments of Architecture and Civil Engineering were opened in 1963.  
 
The University of Liechtenstein is a leading university in the international Lake Constance region. The University Liechtenstein's Institute of Architecture and Planning is the first and only institution worldwide to receive RIBA accreditation for all programme levels (BSc, MSc and PhD). The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is a global professional membership body. It is one of the most renowned institutions that validates schools of architecture around the world.  
 
The SPINNEREI is the student's office of the University of Liechtenstein. They organize a variety of events during the semester and also work with other students’ initiatives. Every Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. a get-together of all students and university staff takes place at the Red Cube (the student bar). Please see here for information on the events and sporting activities takes place on campus. 

Vaduz is the capital of Liechtenstein and the seat of the national parliament. The city, which is located along the Rhine River, has just 5450 residents, and is the second largest in Liechtenstein after neighbouring Schaan.

Despite not having its own airport or railway station, Vaduz attracts quite a few international tourists, with the nearest airport being Zurich Airport 120km away. The lively city centre is surrounded by modern and neo-gothic architecture which can be explored by foot within a day.

Liechtenstein, officially the Principality of Liechtenstein, is a small country located in Central Europe, between Switzerland and Austria, right in the Alps. The official language of Liechtenstein is German, however English is prevalent, and French and Latin are widely taught in secondary public schools. It has a population of roughly 36,000 people, with approximately a third having been born in another country.

Liechtenstein is a member of the UN but not the EU, although it participates in both the Schengen Area and the European Economic Area. It is Europe's fourth-smallest country, with an area of just over 160 square kilometres, and a mere 25km long by 12km wide at its broadest point. Despite its size, Liechtenstein has one of the highest personal income rates (GDP per capita) in the world.

If you love nature, winter sports, finance and business, European culture, mountain activities, forests and easy European travel, Liechtenstein is the place for you. Despite being one of the most industrialised countries in the world and with such a small land area, it is very easy to ‘escape’ to a lakeside log cabin in the shadow of the Alps. The Lonely Planet guide refers to this country as ‘pure fairy-tale stuff”.

Liechtenstein is a land known for medieval castles, such as the Vaduz Castle, the home of the Prince of Liechtenstein. There are many interesting things to do and see here - visit the local vineyards, explore unique sculpture festivals, stop by the Liechtenstein Festival of music, art and culture at Schaan, or visit the Calculator Museum, the Gutenberg Castle or Roman excavations.

You can party with Liechtenstein royalty! Every year on August 15, the royals of Liechtenstein celebrate the National Day of the country by opening the doors of Vaduz Castle to the public.

Liechtenstein is the world’s leading producer of false teeth - about 40% of all false teeth in Europe and 20% of worldwide supply is sourced from the country.

All students must meet standard exchange selection criteria and any host institution restrictions.

The University of Liechtenstein has limited capacity for the studio in the Architecture programs.

Credits are measured by the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and the following applies: 

• 18 units = 30 ECTS 
• 13.5 units = 22.5 ECTS  

It can sometimes be difficult to make up exactly 22.5 units (not all courses will be worth exactly 7.5 ECTS), but you should be able to get very close. Make sure you check with your Program Director if you don’t have exactly 22.5 ECTS

To participate in the courses taught at the University of Liechtenstein, an upper-intermediate Level B2 (+) is required. You can submit any diploma or certificate. Certificates of attainment are also accepted.

2022/2023 Architecture modules

University of Liechtenstein does not offer airport pick up. Students will need to make their own way to the campus from Zurich Airport. 
 
The nearest large international airport is in Zurich-Kloten (Switzerland). Regional airports are located in St. Gallen-Altenrhein (approx. 40 km, Canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland), in Friedrichshafen (approx. 80 km, Germany) and in Innsbruck (approx. 200 km, Austria). There are numerous connections between these regional airports and international hubs in Germany (Frankfurt, Berlin), Austria (Vienna) and other European countries.

As an exchange partner with the University of South Australia, you do not have to pay tuition fees to University of Liechtenstein, instead you will pay tuition as you would normally at UniSA.
