Also known as ‘La Statale’, the University of Milan is, relatively speaking, one of Italy’s younger university institutions. It was founded in 1924 with only four faculties thanks to the tenacious efforts of doctor and gynaecologist Luigi Mangiagalli, who in creating La Statale, realised his long-held dream of building a university for Lombardy’s regional capital. 

Today, La Statale is one of the largest universities in Europe, with about 60,000 students, and a permanent teaching and research staff of about 2,000. The University of Milan has nine schools and offers 134 undergraduate and graduate courses, 21 Doctoral Schools and 92 Specialization Schools. The University's research and teaching activities have developed over the years and have received important international recognitions. The University is the only Italian member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU), a group of twenty-one research-intensive European Universities. It consistently ranks one of the best universities of Italy, both overall and in specific subject areas. It currently ranks 8th nationally by Times Higher Education 2020. 

There are two campuses, in Milan and Lombardy. The Milan campus is not contained in one vicinity as the university is spread all over the city of Milan. 

Milan, the capital of the Lombardy region in northern Italy is the second most populous city in Italy after Rome. The city’s business district hosts Italy’s stock exchange and the headquarters of national and international banks and companies. Milan is considered one of the world’s four fashion capitals. Over eight million overseas visitors travel here every year, attracted by the city’s museums and art galleries which are home to some of the world’s most important works by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci.

Italy, officially the Italian Republic, is a European country in south-central Europe that is also considered a part of western Europe. Italy borders France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Vatican City and San Marino.

Italy has historically been home to many different peoples and cultures - ancient Romans, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greek settlements, Etruscans and Celts. Its long history and various cultures have resulted in a lasting Italian stamp on the world, making it a perfect destination for those with an interest in culture or history.

With over 60 million inhabitants, Italy is the fourth-most populous member of the European Union (EU). The official language is Italian, with many regional variants throughout the country. Recent immigration has also meant that you'll hear other languages as you go, mainly from surrounding European countries. Culture, history, language, food, wine, art, festivals, beaches, mountains, countryside, ruins – there’s so much to experience in Italy. Popular locations include big sites in Rome, such as the Colosseum and Roman Forum and the city of Venice with its gondola-filled canals. However there is much more to see as many regions of Italy are distinct and have their own attractions. Consider a visit to Vatican City, the country with 5.8 popes per square km. Visit Cinque Terre, a string of centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline. Explore the medieval towns of Tuscany with their spectacular scenery and rich art. There are many cultural, historical, artistic and scenic gems to uncover in Italy, which is home to more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other country in the world.

Rome, the capital city of Italy, was founded in 753 BC. However Italy is one of Western Europe’s youngest countries as it was established in 1861 when the separate nation-states unified as the Kingdom of Italy. Batteries were invented in Italy! In 1800, a scientist named Alessandro Volta created the first battery. The volt (the unit of electrical power) is named after him.

All students must meet standard exchange selection criteria and any host institution restrictions.

Credits are measured by the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and the following applies: 

• 18 units = 30 ECTS 
• 13.5 units = 22.5 ECTS 

It can sometimes be difficult to make up exactly 22.5 units (not all courses will be worth exactly 7.5 ECTS), but you should be able to get very close. Make sure you check with your Program Director if you don’t have exactly 22.5 ECTS.

UniSA students are not required to provide evidence of English proficiency. If you intend on enrolling in Italian courses while on exchange, you will need to take an Italian language course on your arrival at Uni Milan. More information can be found here. 

Find courses at Universita degli Studi di Milano

Universita degli Studi di Milano does not offer airport pick up. Students will need to make their own way to the campus. The city has three airports: Linate, Malpensa and Orio al Serio.

The University of Milan offers accommodation for exchange students in the residence halls. Please note accommodation is limited and is allocated on first come first serve basis and availability. Accommodation option is offered in shared rooms with two beds per room.

As an exchange partner with the University of South Australia, you do not have to pay tuition fees to Universita degli Studi di Milano, instead you will pay tuition as you would normally at UniSA.
