The University of Manitoba (UoM) is at the heart of North America, where the first treaties since the Confederation of Canada were signed and where the Métis organized the Confederation of Manitoba in 1870. Having just celebrated their 140th anniversary, UoM is the oldest university in western Canada. They are ranked in the globally-recognized QS World Universities Ranking and Times Higher Education, boasting more than 350 Bison Sports athletes in our elite interuniversity sport programs.
With two campuses in Winnipeg, Fort Garry and Bannatyne, and over 100 programs, the U of M provides the opportunity to experience learning in a different and supportive environment. The University features new, modern facilities complemented by historic buildings that have defined the campus for more than a century. These innovative spaces enrich the experiences of students, our community and visitors to campus.
UoM connects new students with an experienced student who will act as a mentor. Mentors contact students by email or Skype before arrival and meet with students approximately once per week (for 1-2 hours) to provide intercultural, personal, and academic support.
There are over 200 student groups representing a diverse range of interests. Popular groups include: Photography, Amnesty International, Choir, Robotics, Cultural Groups, Swing Dance, Gaming, Gardening, Rainbow Pride Mosaic, Aboriginal Student’s Association, Womyn’s Centre.
Our new Active Living Centre is a world-class facility, offering students many options including: recreational sports leagues, climbing wall, swimming pool, hockey, tennis, soccer, water polo, quidditch, badminton, ultimate Frisbee, fitness classes, yoga, and much more!
Winnipeg is the capital and the largest city in the province of Manitoba. Many students take advantage of Winnipeg’s central location to travel north to Churchill to see the famous polar bears, west to the Rocky Mountains, east to Toronto or Montreal or even South to the USA. Near and within Winnipeg, students can explore abundant nature, forests, lakes, beaches, rivers and parks. Winnipeg is also home to one of the largest Indigenous student populations in Canada.
Canada is a country in the north of North America, extending from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and northward into the Arctic Ocean. It is the world's second largest country by total area, and shares the world's longest bi-national land border with the USA.
As a whole, Canada is sparsely populated with the majority of its land area dominated by forest and tundra. Over 80% of its 37.6 million people are concentrated in large and medium-sized cities, with 70% residing within 100 kilometres of the US border. Both English and French are commonly spoken.
Cities such as Montreal and Quebec located in the historically French part of Canada offer a European city experience in North America, along with the opportunity to develop language skills and explore a different culture. Canadians are renowned for being friendly and helpful, and Canada experiences very low crime and a high standard of living. The exchange rate is generally more favourable for Canada than the US, making it more affordable for students.
Canada’s incredible range of natural wonders are perfect for exploring – it has the most coastline of any country, alongside famous mountain ranges, huge lakes, ancient forests, arctic lands, some desert and unique wildlife. Popular natural attractions include the Canadian Rocky Mountain parks, the Aurora Borealis, Dinosaur Provincial Park, Nahanni National Park Reserve, Cabot Trail, Niagara Falls, and Banff National Park.
