The Industrial Design and Product Design Graduate exhibition titled Forecast was inspired by the artistic and social movement, Futurism. The movement originated in the 20th century, it emphasised speed, technology, youth, violence and objects such as the car, the airplane and the industrial city. This exhibition embodies this movement, emphasising the development of design. These graduates are the designers of the future, designers of the new world.
Forecast is a collection of student work by University of South Australia students from the Graduate Diploma of Design and Master of Design programs, with a specialisation in Industrial Design. For the first time this years exhibition features work by the final year students from the Bachelor of Design, Product Design, Undergraduate Program.
The exhibition features a diverse range of work which highlights the many aspects of the world designers and good design can have an impact. The role of a designer is not limited to a sketchbook, computer, workshop or spreadsheet. A designers role is to understand the technical, cultural, economic and human factors of a given design problem to create fulfilling and meaningful experiences using the best ‘tools’ available to them. The designs presented here have all been developed through an iterative process which considers all of these factors.
The students featured in the Forecast exhibition will be designing experiences that respond to technical and cultural factors that are yet to be revealed, but they have developed a methodology to observe, analyse and synthesise appropriate design solutions.
