‘Shoulder to Shoulder’

Building on the 2010 and 2013 exhibitions, this is the most ambitious exhibition to date from Catherine House Inc, including thematically linked, mixed media displays, and is the first involving artist and instructor Ava Leitner. The collective works consider or reflect the theme ‘Shoulder to Shoulder’, either in practice or in idea. The exhibition presents an exciting creative opportunity for the Catherine House community of artists, and will feature some ambitious projects unlike any showcased before.

Catherine House has provided inner city supported accommodation and services for women affected by homelessness since 1988.  It has sixteen houses offering emergency, transitional and permanent accommodation to 48 women a night. The Catherine House Women’s Centre, Sagarmatha, provides varied activities and programs designed to enhance social interaction, build women’s confidence, self-esteem and well-being. Education, vocational and employment activities are also offered.

The Arts in different forms have been offered in the centre since 2007, with the CHart Exhibitions providing intense development opportunities, and an avenue to publicly acknowledge the artistic skills and talents of women that use Catherine House.  At the same time it creates wider community awareness and understanding of the issues that bring women to homelessness.

Art is an integral part of Catherine House’s work, and aims to provide women experiencing homelessness with creative opportunities to tap into their unknown artistic gifts and talents. Offering art is also in keeping with Catherine House’s mission, whose outcomes include, among others, providing opportunities to clients to develop their personal well-being and build a meaningful and satisfying life.
