Continuing our focus on Palliative Care, this event presented during National Palliative Care Week (21-28 May), will be delivered by Professor Hubertus Jersmann and will examine palliative care in relation to those with Respiratory Illnesses.
Professor Jersmann will talk about several end stage lung diseases including lung cancer, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension and Interstitial Lung Disease. He is an interventional pulmonologist and will touch on the role of palliative interventions including lung transplantation, tunneled catheter for pleural effusions, airway stents and laser. Some of the issues associated with the provision of home oxygen and accessing palliative supports will also feature in his talk.
Professor Hubertus Jersmann
Professor Hubertus Jersmann is a Respiratory and Sleep Physician at the Royal Adelaide and Burnside War Memorial Hospitals. He has a special interest in Interventional Pulmonology, inserting endobronchial valves to achieve non-surgical lung volume reduction in select cases of severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and bronchial thermoplasty to remodel airways to reduce smooth muscle hypertrophy for patients with severe intractable asthma.
Professor Jersmann has an MD in human genetics and a PhD in immunobiology and is a Professor in the School of Medicine, University of Adelaide. He enjoys the combination of clinical work, academic laboratory-based research and particularly teaching medical
students and doctors in training.
