I have to admit to being hugely influenced by the NASA approach to big challenges. The whole organisation unites to deliver – making, as NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden said in Unijam, ‘the impossible possible’. We have no designs on taking on the impossible – but the one team approach to operating and engaging across the University has great appeal. It has such potential as a differentiator for UniSA. Since late last year, I’ve challenged senior staff to think across traditional organisational boundaries, to seek pathways that cross silos and to look at life through a whole of institution lens. I’m really keen that this approach will work its way into the focus and culture of the entire university – I believe that the bedrock foundation for this is already in place, I see it in the staff and students I meet on a daily basis – so that we can celebrate collective success, and co-create the future. One of the key messages I’ve been putting to senior staff is that I’m not going stand behind a lectern to tell people what to do – I’m quite happy to communicate what it is we have to achieve, and why that is important, but then I want us to work out together how to deliver on our ambition, charting the course and reaching the goal together.
