About This Project

Develop innovative treatments for antimicrobial-resistant infections

Are you passionate about a career in pharmaceuticals and keen to develop novel solutions to infectious disease challenges? The University of South Australia – Australia’s University of Enterprise – is offering a ground-breaking project-based PhD with world-wide impact within our Centre for Pharmaceutical Innovation, in partnership with Advanced Veterinary Therapeutics PTY Limited.

This project aims to confirm two promising novel actives for prominent infectious disease treatments, solve the AMR crisis, and offer effective treatments in both animals and humans.

By targeting veterinary medicines with significant unmet global needs as the first achievement, the higher risks associated with human medicines are averted. We are now primed and ready for advanced pharmaceutical development and clinical study because the two novel treatments have undergone extensive pre-clinical proof-of-concept testing. 

This highly collaborative project will be carried out by UniSA, the University of Adelaide, and Advanced Veterinary Therapeutics PTY Limited. It offers you outstanding early career researcher training opportunities at the interfaces of medicinal chemistry, drug design, parasitology, animal models, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics in different laboratories. 

You will join the Pharmaceutical Innovation and Development Group (PIDG), housed within the Centre for Pharmaceutical Innovation (CPI). PIDG is a highly productive multicultural team of research staff and students, engaged in a range of pharmaceutical discovery and development projects. Our team is known for its excellent research culture and is highly engaged, supportive, and productive.

What you’ll do

In this project-based research degree, you will undertake drugs analytical methods development with HPLC and LC/MS, pre-formulation studies, formulation design and preparation process optimisation, formulation quality evaluation based on USP and relative standard requirements, and PK-PD study in dogs and pharmacokinetics modelling. 

Your studies will help you to evolve as a translational pharmaceutical scientist with problem-solving skills. The project will help you develop expertise in pharmaceutical product development, in vitro and in vivo evaluation and correlation, and bio samples analysis.

Specifically, upon completion you will gain skills in drug analysis using different equipment, such as (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry, HPLC with different detectors and LC/MS, and Otic formulation design, optimisation and evaluation. 

There are opportunities for you to undertake some experiments in our collaborating labs and training at the interfaces of different fields in collaborating universities. 

We will encourage and support you to participate in team research meetings and present your work at national and international conferences. High-quality publications in refereed international journals will also be supported. These will help you develop a strong researcher profile and impact and elevate your future employment prospects.  

Where you’ll be based

You will be based in the Centre for Pharmaceutical Innovation. We design and develop conventional and novel patient centric pharmaceutical products. We’re known for innovation, impact, quality education and training, and we engage with industry and end-users. We are focused on drug discovery, human and veterinary pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, complementary medicines, and nutraceuticals.

We aim to impact medicine development for the new world via new chemistry; new materials, analytics and modelling; novel drug delivery technologies; pharmaceutical innovation; preclinical optimisation; and clinical and commercial translation.

Financial Support

This project is funded for reasonable research expenses. Additionally, a living allowance scholarship of $29,863 per annum is available to eligible applicants. Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants will be eligible to receive an increased stipend rate of $46,653 per annum (2023 rates). A fee-offset or waiver for the standard term of the program is also included. Eligibility and Selection

This project is open to application from both domestic and international applicants.

Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for entrance into a PhD.

All applications that meet the eligibility and selection criteria will be considered for this project. A merit selection process will be used to determine the successful candidate.

The successful applicant is expected to study full-time and to be based at our City West campus in the heart of Adelaide.
