About this project

This project will provide a context for Contemporary Art Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidates to pursue research topics and questions of their own determination, with the intention that the research will contribute to the advancement of understanding and practice in the visual arts. Projects with a focus on experimental art practices, or new paradigms for how visual art may be practiced or engaged, are especially welcome.

Disciplines of particular focus can include 2D (painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, etc.), 3D (sculpture, installation, contemporary glass and ceramics, textiles, etc.) and 4D (moving image, new media art, interactive art, live art, virtual and augmented reality, etc.) areas.

The key outcomes of the research will be a professional-level body of creative work, presented as a final exhibition, screening, performance or publication, and an exegesis outlining the project’s context, methods employed, and insights gained during the program of research.

The candidate will be undertaking their research within the state-of-the-art workshop and studio facilities of UniSA Creative.

External Supervisors can also be appointed, where relevant, as well as industry advisors.

Financial Support

This project is funded for reasonable research expenses. Additionally, successful applicants will be eligible for the Joyner Fine Arts Scholarship. This living allowance scholarship of $32,850 per annum is available to Australian and New Zealand citizens, and permanent residents of Australia, including permanent humanitarian visa holders. Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants will be eligible to receive an increased stipend rate of $45,076 per annum. A fee-offset or waiver for the standard term of the program is also included.

Eligibility and Selection

This project is open to applications from Australian or New Zealand citizens, and Australian permanent residents or permanent humanitarian visa holders. International applicants are not invited to apply at this time.

Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for entrance into a Master of Research or PhD.

Additionally applicants must meet the project’s essential selection criteria:

Hold relevant and appropriate academic qualifications (e.g. Honours with Distinction in Visual Art)
Submit a portfolio of creative works with evidence of an associated record of visual arts exhibitions at recognised venues
Provide examples of critical writing on visual art theory and/or practice

Applicants who can also demonstrate the following will be highly regarded:

Have a record of visual arts exhibitions at national or world-class venues
Provide examples of published critical writing on visual art theory and/or practice

Applicants should also submit a full research proposal (approximately 2500 words) that has been developed in consultation with the proposed lead supervisor. A template to help guide this application is available here.

The successful applicant is expected to study full-time and to be based at our City West campus in the heart of Adelaide.

Applicants are expected to start in a timely fashion upon receipt of an offer. Extended deferral periods are not available. Applications close on Sunday 1 October 2023.
