​​A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity open to Australian visual artists to complete a year-long placement in an international learning institution

International Visual Arts Scholarships

Prospective applicants are advised to thoroughly read the Guidelines before submitting an application. The Guidelines were updated in 2023 to include less restrictive eligibility criteria, allowing graduates of more than five years’ standing to apply for a scholarship.

 

APPLY FOR THE SAMSTAG SCHOLARSHIP

The annual scholarships enable Australian artists to develop their artistic capacities and skills through a dedicated period of practice-based learning.

Each scholarship covers reasonable costs for twelve months overseas, including institutional fees for one academic year of study (where applicable), a generous tax-exempt stipend of $75,000, return airfares, and travel and medical insurance.

The application process is online. Complete the following steps:

  1. Find out if you are eligible:
  • All applicants must be either Australian citizens or have permanent resident status in Australia.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must be either: a student, currently enrolled in a practice-led visual arts program, having successfully completed at least two years of an undergraduate or post-graduate degree;
    OR a graduate of a practice-led visual art undergraduate degree or postgraduate qualification at an Australian institution of higher education.

    Complete and submit the online application form prior to midnight 30 June 2025 (Australian Central Standard Time)
    Please note that the online application process was updated in 2023. Applicants now need to create an account within the portal before submitting an application. If you applied for the Class of 2024 and/or Class of 2025 scholarships you can use the same account to apply for the Class of 2026. Accounts can be created now and the application can be started and saved for future submission. We encourage applicants to explore the application portal early, even if not submitting an application until later.
