First presented at the 16th International Architecture Biennale in Venice 2018, Somewhere Other elaborates on architecture as a portal of experience and a framework for our perceptions. The concertina timber structure framed with delicate steelwork is an instrument to bridge across distance, its interconnected voids and apertures introducing the visitor to ‘somewhere other’ via encounters with the work of artist Natasha Johns-Messenger and moving images by creative duo Coco and Maximilian. With a form reminiscent of a telescope, Somewhere Other encourages us to peer between worlds, encouraging us to consider the transportive potential of the spaces we build and the power to be found at the confluence of art and architecture. Initially presented as a link between Australia and Venice, the work of John Wardle Architects finds a new context at Samstag, in a gallery designed by the architect in 2007.

2020 Adelaide//International catalogue with essays by Robert Cook, Ross Gibson, Rachel Hurst, Gillian Brown and Andy Butler.
