‘Beyond the Visual: An Introduction to Researching Multimodal Phenomena’

presented by

Dr Frank Serafini

Dr Frank Serafini is UniSA’s visiting research fellow who will be presenting at this seminar as part of the CRESI Methodology and Workshop Series.

Although various theoretical “turns” can be seen as new ways of conceptualizing the world and the ways humans represent and communicate, it is of vital importance researchers continue to question and problematize the ways multimodality is conceptualized and applied, focusing on the social construction of meaning, the ideologies inherent in such an endeavor, and the appropriate use of the analytical frameworks drawn upon to understand multimodal phenomena. This seminar will provide a survey of the theoretical foundations of visual and multimodal research and the wide range of analytical frameworks available to social scientists as they investigate multimodal texts, objects, events, and spaces.
