One of Europe’s most celebrated social theorists Professor John Urry will discuss the cost of society’s carbon addiction in a fully-booked event jointly presented by the University of South Australia’s Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre and Hawke Research Institute tomorrow (Thursday) night.
Lancaster University’s Distinguished Professor of Sociology, Prof Urry will join Hawke Research Institute Director Professor Anthony Elliott to discuss the real cost of oil at UniSA’s City West campus.
Hawke Centre Executive Director Elizabeth Ho says Prof Urry will look at the personal, social and environmental costs of civilisation’s carbon addiction and ask what the future holds for people, energy and climates in a post-carbon world.
“We are delighted to have Prof Urry here in Adelaide for a wide-ranging discussion on the scale, speed and impact of future energy changes over the next century,” Ms Ho says.
“From oil dregs to carbon rationing, Prof Urry envisions the future of an oil-dependent world facing energy descent.”
Prof Urry has held the role of Lancaster Centre for Motilities Research Director since 2003 and has worked with researchers from around the world to develop social science theory and investigate the implications of climate change and oil in energy and society.
