Neil van der Ploeg

From: Albury, right on the border of NSW and Victoria. For cycling, it’s got some nice climbs and good flat areas, and we’re not too far from the Victorian Alps, so I could head down there and get some mountains in, escape the heat.

Recent career highlight: For me, getting in the Tour Down Under. It’s a race at the highest level of the sport, all the World Tour teams are here, and in this day and age, it’s not at all a warm up event for the rest of the season. They come here fighting really hard, so it’s a great opportunity to be in that situation.

What would you be doing instead of cycling: I have already gone to uni and studied physio, so there is a good chance I’d go into that. There should be a steady stream of people needing that sort of care, from athletes to an aging population.

Fav music: Well, my favourite band is probably Tool, historically, a bit of progressive metal. And I actually drum a little bit, I drummed through high school. I don’t own a kit at the moment, but I have been getting interested in the idea of a drumming troupe, that group drumming thing. I am definitely going to join one of those at some point.

Top film: Oh, that would have to be The Matrix.
