Ethics and compliance

Welcome to Ethics and compliance at the University of South Australia. This site provides information and support for staff and students who wish to undertake research within the University.

'Ethics and compliance' can be defined as: conducting your research in a responsible manner, complying with the requirements of legislation, policies and procedures, codes and guidelines.

The Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research was released by the Australian Research Council, Universities Australia and the National Health and Medical Research Council in 2007. It replaces the previous Joint NHMRC/AVCC Statement and Guidelines on Research Practice (1997). The release of the Code corresponds with the release of the 2007 edition of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research. These two documents articulate institutional responsibilities for research governance and education.

The Australian Code and the National Statement stress the responsibilities of institutions and situate responsible conduct and research ethics within research governance. Both documents specify that institutions must foster and support a culture of ethical and responsible conduct. The Code states that institutions should provide 'an appropriate research governance framework, through which research is assessed for quality, safety, privacy, risk management, financial management, and ethical acceptability. The framework should specify the roles, responsibilities and accountabilities of all those who play a part in research.'  The University's response
