RDLO Adelaide and environs SA strategic plan
The University of South Australia hosts the Regional Disability Liaison Officer Initiative project.
The University of South Australia has embraced a strong commitment to equity from its foundation in January 1991 and this commitment is enshrined in the University’s Act of Establishment. Equity considerations have been integrated into all aspects of the University’s planning, quality assurance, reporting and review processes and into its core areas of teaching and learning, research, consultancy, and community service.
At the corporate strategic level there are statements outlining the values of equity and diversity, and the process of reconciliation. The corporate plan includes goals in relation to students with disabilities. The University’s commitment to an inclusive culture and its careful attention to social justice issues are evident by the comprehensive range of policies, programs, plans and publications. These include, in particular, the Students with Disabilities Policy, the Disability Action Plan and a variety of dedicated programs and publications that are successful in bringing about positive outcomes for students with disabilities and ensure an equitable learning environment.
The Adelaide and Environs SA region includes the greater metropolitan area and geographical areas known as Adelaide, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eyre Peninsular, Kangaroo Island, and Yorke Peninsular. It contains 75 per cent of the State’s population and covers areas roughly bordered by Port Pirie, Port Lincoln, Kangaroo Island (Kingscote), Goyder, Renmark, and Adelaide, as shown on the map of South Australia.
Due to population groupings, the location of higher education institutions and industry, rural and remoteness issues in the State, the Regional Disability Liaison Officer and the Disability Coordination Officers work collaboratively to ensure clients receive the best service. This collaboration is enhanced by the support of the joint reference group. The Adelaide and Environs SA area is a geographically large region and there are a diverse range of social, economic and development issues. To address these issues the reference group and the Regional Disability Liaison Officer have agreed to adopt a strategic approach to providing resources and services in the region.

The activities and projects of the RDLO are governed by the RDLO Reference Group. The reference group comprises senior members from key constituencies across the State. All members of the reference group actively support the RDLO Initiative and provide strategic direction, information and introductions to key people in the disability, employment, training, community and education sectors. This access to resources, networks and information enables the RDLO to work effectively across all sectors. The reference group is responsible for identifying projects for the RDLO. It has the flexibility to establish sub-committees or working groups or to invite additional members with specific expertise to participate in particular projects.
