Trade Practices Act
The Trade Practices Act (TPA) is a Commonwealth statute whose objectives are to
- prevent anti-competitive conduct, thereby encouraging competition and efficiency in business
- safeguard the position of consumers in their dealings with producers and sellers, and businesses in their dealings with other businesses
The TPA contains provisions prohibiting corporations from engaging in restrictive trade practices and unconscionable conduct, and also provisions on consumer protection.
The TPA applies to the business activities of the University in a similar manner as to general trading corporations - this includes the University's dealings with suppliers, competitors, research partners, students, users of University services and premises. As an employee of the University, you are required to be familiar with the TPA, particularly if you are involved in the following University activities
- providing courses
- purchasing goods and services
- supplying goods and services
- advertising, promotions and marketing
- agreements with competing service providers
For more information on the TPA and how it may apply to the University's activities, please read the:
