“The instruction quality of FTA (Flight Training Adelaide) for aviation students is unmatched. I've learned more about how to be a safe pilot in the last two months than I did in 1.5 years at American flight schools.”

Why did you choose Adelaide and what were your first impressions? What’s one thing you love about Adelaide?

Adelaide was my first choice out of the English-speaking exchange options from my home university. Despite being in the city, I would live very close to both beaches and mountains, providing a remote nature feel I enjoy.

In addition, UniSA has a world-class program for the field I hope to go into (aviation), which is a very rare major. My first impressions of Adelaide were quite positive. I got to explore the city and nearby areas through tours run by Bupa and G'Day mates. I loved the beaches, mountains, Central Market, and Rundle Mall. The thing I love the most about Adelaide would have to be the parklands.

Describe your first weeks, settling into classes, settling into life in Australia? Did you feel supported during this time? How was your Orientation?

I quickly adapted and found my way in Australia. Unfortunately, a lot of the hobbies I had in America were not available at UniSA, which led me to pick up new hobbies. I joined the UniSA soccer team and enrolled in CrossFit and jiu jitsu. Orientation was fantastic and I met some other international students who I ended up travelling around South Australia with.

How would you describe the quality of teaching staff? How have they supported you during your studies?

The teaching staff is incredible. I have been enrolled in flight school in America for a little over one year, but the instruction quality of FTA (Flight Training Adelaide) for aviation students is unmatched. I've learned more about how to be a safe pilot in the last two months than I did in 1.5 years at American flight schools.

How would you describe life in Adelaide to someone who hasn’t been here before?

Life in Adelaide is peaceful, refreshing, and safe! Thanks to it being a smaller city, you will likely run into people you know at some point. The city planners have done an excellent job incorporating the parklands into the city, making it a great place to relax.

What has been the best experience so far? Are there any strong memories you’ll take home with you?

My best experience was spending three days in the Flinders Ranges on a tour with Words on Wheels! It was incredible to learn about the formation of mountains, enjoy Australia's beautiful scenery, and get to know other international students. I don't think I will ever forget stargazing and playing games around the campfire. I've also learned a lot about pilots and aviation and I will certainly take the memories of stories and lessons home with me so I can be a safer pilot.

What advice would you give to a student who was hesitant or considering joining the exchange program?

Absolutely do it! Studying abroad is an incredible experience and will help you become more confident, resourceful, and understanding of other cultures. Plus you'll have incredible memories to look back on!
