The Ian Wark Research Institute conducts research on minerals and materials, with the underlying theme of particle and material interfaces. Often overlooked, the science of interfaces – the junctions between different materials or phases – is central to many products and processes that affect our everyday lives.

We conduct a blend of fundamental and applied research across three key industry sectors:

  • Bio and polymer interfaces: Colloid, interfacial and surface science applied to biological, biomedical and pharmaceutical systems.
  • Colloids and nanostructuresStability of colloids; nanostructures; structured surfaces; responsive surfaces; static and dynamic wetting.
  • Mineral processing: Research on the science and technology of primary mineral extraction.
