 Student study tour - vietnam 2016

Sunday 14 August saw students and staff from CIL depart for Vietnam to explore the relationship between Vietnam and Australia in the 50 years since the Battle of Long Tan.   They are taking part in the commemoration activities for the 50th anniversary of this battle as well as meet with a number of Australian dignitaries and visit a school for the visually impaired run by an Australian-educated director.

Students will document the business and education ties between the two countries during their week-long trip.  They will also have the opportunity to donate toys, first aid kits, hygiene products to a school for the vision impaired in Ho Chi Minh City that were donated to the group before they departed Australia.    

 2016 CIL Annual awards

                 

On Wednesday 15 June 2016 CIL hosted its annual awards event in the Hartley Playhouse Theatre at Magill.  It was very well attended with Ms Maureen Grieve, Board Director and Vice Chairperson from Australian and New Zealand Cultural Arts to present certificates as well as Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Denise Meredyth.

SA Press Club Awards for students and alumni

In November 2015 the SA Press Club Awards Event saw current journalism students and alumni recognised for their outstanding reporting.

There were a record number of entries this year for the University of South Australia Student Journalism Award. Award judge and UniSA Program Director of Journalism and Professional Writing, Patrizia Furlan said there were two exemplary finalists both of whom are still completing degrees at UniSA while working in industry.

The judging panel noted that even though the winner - third-year journalism student Fraser Goldsworthy - hasn’t graduated yet with a journalism degree, the three stories submitted revealed a seasoned reporter, not a student.

“Winning this award means a lot, especially being only 21 and not having as much experience as my colleagues. To me at least, it shows I must be doing something right,” Fraser said.

“I feel extremely lucky to have the opportunity I have, working with and learning from some of the most respected and experienced journalists in South Australia, and to be recognised for the small part I play in 7 News Adelaide. It is very humbling.

“I hope that I can keep doing what I'm doing right now (reporting at 7) when I graduate - and while I've been doing it for close to a year, I still have a lot to learn. It's what I love about this industry and journalism on the whole - it's something different every day and we're constantly kept on our toes!”

Bachelor of Law/Journalism student Isabel Dayman, who is a cadet at ABC news, was Highly Commended for the student award.

UniSA journalism alumni awarded were Sheradyn Holderhead for Best Regional/Rural Report; Matt Doran for Best Radio Report; and Ben Avery for Best TV News Report.

The high standard of work produced by UniSA students was also commended at an annual showcase for students in the Television and Video Journalism subject who filmed and edited their own stories which were then judged by local news directors.

JAPANESE IN-COUNTRY COURSE

This course will provide students who are enrolled in Japanese 1B or 2B in 2015, with an in-country immersion experience by studying at an approved tertiary institution specialising in the teaching and learning of the Japanese language to foreigners. See course ling for more information.

The South Australian Globalist THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN GLOBALIST - VOLUME 9, SUMMER 2015

Last issue the South Australian Globalist looked at the world through its division, the world cut up into states and at the conflict erupting between and within this framework laid over the planet. This view can seem disconnected, with trouble in one region seemingly having little do with peace in another; a planet with no rules, only power and emerging orders. This issue we look at the blueprint that runs under it all and ties the world together into one system. When we look through political eyes we see symptoms everywhere, human and environmental, red and aggravated; but when we look through economic eyes we see the nervous system that runs through it all, sending signals- the power here is sustained through inequalities. Here we try to understand why we have great disparities and what this means. We hope this can be the start of your journey into questioning inequalities of all types and understanding these structures as not natural but man made, and with consequences good and bad.

Communications and Languages Workshops

The University of South Australia would like to invite high schools to participate in one or more of a variety of workshops or masterclasses, providing students with valuable opportunities to further explore areas of interest in the relevant disciplines.

The masterclasses on offer include languages, performing arts, creative writing and lighting and will be available to year levels 10-12. A complete list can be found below. Masterclasses can run for up to one hour and be tailored to your class.

  • Performing Arts - developing musical performance skills and/or dramatic skills
  • Linguistics - discovering the nature of language and how it matters in the contemporary world
  • Lighting workshop - exploring light and film on a DSLR camera
  • Character animation class - discovering 3D character animation production
  • Sociology - introducing a sociological understanding of society
  • Languages - exploring the application of the French, Italian, and Japanese languages
  • Creative writing – finding your voice and sharing your passion for writing and reading at the university level
