In an increasingly globalised and digital world, education is the spark that ignites new ideas, increases economic outcomes and creates social inclusion. Developing quality education and training opportunities is a joint effort, bringing together experts in education, social and wellbeing policy, digital inclusion, literacy, skills gaps, and personalised and quality learning.

At UniSA, our experience as a leading education provider and home to world-class education research, allows us to take an open-minded, multidisciplinary approach to improve Australia’s education sector.

We believe that working closely with industry, government and the community leads to creating education systems that are technology driven, socially inclusive and provide tailored learning experiences. To do this, we bring together researchers from many disciplines including education, information technology, psychology, sociology, policy development and linguistics.

Using children’s voices to build better worlds

Decisions affecting children’s lives are made every day, often with little input from children themselves. In partnership with Australian Department of Education, local communities and importantly, children, we found a better way. Children were engaged directly and involved in the decision-making to ensure their voices were heard. Through this partnership we developed UniSA’s Children’s Voices principles, which involved talking with children about their lives and needs, collecting their responses and encouraging them to become involved in decisions that affect them.

“We have engaged end-users with the voices of over 5,000 children to date. This engagement has influenced state policies, national Child-Friendly Cities approaches, community planning, children’s literacy, and the provision of educational resources.”

I’m passionate about research that contributes to the understanding of inclusive educational practices. Alongside partners such as UNICEF Australia, Commissioners for Children and Young People and Principal Associations, I am investigating exclusionary policies and practices in Australian Schools and the impact they have on vulnerable children. Through this research, my team is hoping to identify alternative policy and practice recommendations for managing disorderly students. This could lead to more inclusive learning environments and improvements to the health and wellbeing of young people.

My research provides expertise in two fields: child protection and wellbeing in early childhood education, and Australian family violence laws and policies impacting family safety. My program of research investigates ways in which educators can support young children’s wellbeing and learning and social policy impacts on vulnerable families. Together with Salisbury Communities for Children, my colleagues and I are working with early childhood setting staff to co-design wellbeing resources, activities and practices to develop effective wellbeing approaches.

After working in Aboriginal Education since 1995, my research focuses on culturally responsive pedagogies, Aboriginal languages and remote Aboriginal education. My colleagues and I work with teachers, Aboriginal Education Officers and Elders to co-create Australian Culturally Responsive Pedagogies, which inform theory, policy and practice in schools and teacher preparation courses. Providing teachers, the tools to improve our work in Indigenous education helps address the disparity in learning outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous children.
